I am loving the new character of mystery and intrigue on one of my favorite shows Gossip Girl. Raina Thorpe, played by the lovely and arresting Tika Sumpter, is really shaking things up on the Upper East Side. But, beyond the world of gossip and glamour, Tika is shaking up television playing triple duty as “Raina” on Gossip Girl, “Jenna Rice” on BET’s The Game, and “Layla Williamson” on daytime’s One Life to Live.
Not in recent history have I seen an actor/actress on so many different programs all running concurrently. This is an even greater feat from an African-American actress as black women still have a difficult time getting cast on hit shows like Gossip Girl (sorry Jessica Szohr, the racially ambiguous “Vanessa Abrams” doesn’t count).
Though she has been on One Life to Live since 2007, it’s encouraging to see the young starlet getting an opportunity to shine on a major platform and be seen by a number of different audiences. I am hopeful that her talent and her bewitching looks will get her far in the merciless world of television.
